Lightning Safety Protocol

What to do when there is a thunderstorm.

All outdoor activities should be stopped immediately and users should proceed to take cover in sheltered structure buildings.

Don’t get caught in the open area
No place outside is safe when a thunderstorm is in the area. Get inside as soon as you hear thunder. Run to a substantial building or hard-topped metal vehicle as fast as you can

  • Seek shelter in a building or a metal-covered vehicle
  • Do not stay in or near water bodies such as the sea or swimming pools
  • Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects
  • Stay away from wet items such as metal objects (e.g. fences, poles, lamp posts)
  • If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current travelling between group members
  • Do not seek shelter under tall trees or small structures like a tent
  • Avoid large, open areas and high ground.
  • Avoid holding metal objects such as golf clubs, umbrella or walking stick.
  • Stay off bicycle and motorcycle.

Wait at least 30 minutes after thunder is last heard before resuming outdoor activities

If someone is struck by lightning
Cardiac arrest is the most common cause of death for those who are struck by lightning. Lightning victims do not carry an electrical charge and hence one should render first aid immediately after bring the victim to a safe sheltered area.

  • Call 995 for help and give the location of incident.
  • Render first aid and begin with CPR.
  • Ask bystander to bring the nearest Automatic External Defibrillator
